The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide

Image
What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that’s going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider’s techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

Tree-Kangaroos: Of Australia and New-Guinea

Image

Product Description
To many people, the suggestion that a kangaroo could live up a tree is fantasy. Yet, in the rainforests of far north Queensland and New Guinea, there are extraordinary kangaroos that do just that. Many aspects of their anatomy and biology (particularly their bipedal hopping ability) suggest a terrestrial kangaroo ancestor. Yet no one has, so far, come forward with a convincing explanation of how, why and when an animal that was so superbly adapted for life on the ground should end up back in the trees. This book reviews the natural history and biology of tree-kangaroos from the time of their first discovery by Europeans in the jungles of West Papua in 1846 right up to present day, covering the latest research being conducted in Australia and New Guinea. Combining information from a number of disparate disciplines, the author sets forth the first explanation of this apparent evolutionary conundrum.

About the Author
Roger Martin has had an enduring interest in the natural history, conservation and management of Australias forest mammals for more than 30 years. Described by Tim Flannery as one of the most experienced field zoologists that I know, he has published numerous scientific papers, written popular articles and lectured in wildlife courses to tertiary students. Since the late 1980s, he has studied Australias rarest tree-kangaroo, Bennetts Tree-kangaroo, in the monsoon forests of Far North Queensland.

Learn Irish: MP3 Audio Format

Image

Pimsleur Irish lessons make advanced language training accessible to any adult learner. Based on Dr. Paul Pimsleur's years of research,
the Pimsleur Irish language courses combine scientific techniques of memory recall with spoken instruction from native speakers.

You can learn Irish more quickly and effectively than you've ever thought possible with Pimsleur. The difference?
Other language programs try to drill in vocabulary with boring repetition and rote memorization, which only makes you sleepy.
Using proven research from one of the first language labs in the country, Dr. Pimsleur discovered exactly how students learn languages,
and realized that there was a pattern to retaining new vocabulary and knowledge.

After reporting his findings to journals and university lectures, Pimsleur developed coursework and released his approach to learning as the Pimsleur series we know today.
Over thirty years ago, Dr. Pimsleur and his partner Charles Heinle (who founded Pimsleur Direct) created the Pimsleur Irish tapes to help people learn Irish fast.
Sold exclusively to university language programs for years, the Pimsleur method is now accessible to everyone.

This set of compact discs contains the complete 4 hours of Pimsleur's Quick & Simple Irish foreign language training.
The set of four compact discs has 8 lesson sets designed to enable listeners to speak basic Irish with native-like pronunciation, enabling basic survival skills, travel and courtesy.

Object-Oriented Design with UML and Java Free E-Books Download

Image

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose programming language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure. Java is a general purpose programming language with a number of features that make the language well suited for use on the World Wide Web. Fully road tested from the authors own courses, Object-Oriented Design with UML and Java shows how considering the modeling and programming languages together from the start can be beneficial, shifting the emphasis away from detailed programming issues, and instead allowing the focus to fall on the analysis of the meaning and accuracy of the model. No prior knowledge of object orientation is assumed, though some knowledge of Java or other high level programming language is required.

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
While teaching Java programming at Minnesota State University, the authors noticed that engineering students were enrolling in Java programming courses in order to obtain basic programming skills, but there were no Java books suitable for courses intended for engineers. They realized the need for a comprehensive Java programming tutorial that offers basic programming skills that can be applied in the field of engineering. With this in mind, the authors developed Java Programming for Engineers in order to meet the needs of both engineers and engineering students. The text uses the personal computer as a development platform and assumes no prior programming experience or knowledge. The only skills expected of the reader are basic keyboarding and user-level familiarity with the PC. Topics covered range from mathematical expressions to linear systems to engineering graphics. Chapters on problem solving skills and the designing of engineering applications walk readers through real word problems they might encounter. Divided into two parts, Part 1 is a description of the Java language, of the fundamentals of object orientation, input and output operations, and error handling. Part 2 is about Java programming for engineers. It starts with computer number systems, fixed- and variable-precision numeric data, mathematical programming in Java as could be of interest to engineers, and concludes with an overview of Java Graphics.

http://i27.tinypic.com/oppa91.jpg

Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery

The process of disaster recovery involves mitigating the likelihood of a disaster and returning the system to a normal state. This book shows you how to implement an effective disaster recovery strategy for SQL Server 2005 databases. With the arrival of SQL Server 2005, you have access to enhanced existing features and powerful new tools, like database snapshots and mirroring, for data backup and disaster recovery. The book also covers fundamental changes to disaster recovery capabilities, and common issues to expect when using new features.

The book examines the technical details of disaster recovery features, and then applies that information to practical scenarios. As businesses become increasingly reliant on the information they store in their various databases, effective data protection becomes ever more critical. Potential disasters can arise from natural causes, user errors, and media or hardware failure. This book will help you ensure that day–to–day activities can continue, regardless of the problem.
